Aloo Chokha Recipe

Aloo Chokha is popular in Bengal and Bihar both states. Preparation of aloo chokha is quite diffrent in both the states. Bihari aloo chokha is a chili dish whereas Bengali aloo chokha is prepared using famous bengali spice mix "Panch Phoron".

This page is explaining Bihari Aloo Chokha recipe. In Bihar, Litti Chokha is a popular combination. Litti is made of Wheat flour and sattu. Chokha is served with Litti. Chokha is a spicy, tangy dish which is prepared using boiled potatoes, chilies and mango powder. We can use lemon juice also instead of mango powder to prepare Chokha.

Mash the boiled potatoes into small pieces to make chokha. Use of green chili or red chili in chokha may be the choice of individual. I have added a little of both.

Ingredients for Bihari Aloo Chokha Recipe

  • Boiled Potato : 2
  • Onion : 1 medium (chopped finely)
  • Ginger Garlic Paste : 1 tsp
  • Green chilli : 3 (finely chopped)
  • Cooking oil : 1 tbsp
  • Dry Red Chili : 2 - 3
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander Seeds : 1 tsp
  • Mango Powder : 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds : 1 tsp
  • How to make Bihari style Aloo Chokha

    Break the boiled potatoes into big pieces.

    Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Allow mustard seeds to crackle.

    Add dry red chili and fry for a while.

    Add crushed coriander seeds and fry for a while. Add Turmeric powder.

    Add finely chopped onion and fry till it turns light pink in color. At this stage, onion remains little crisp in biting. Add ginger garlic paste and fry for 30 seconds on low flames. Add chopped green chili and cook for a while.

    Add mango powder in the masala and mix well. Add salt now. Mash the boiled potatoes into small pieces with hands and add in the pan. Mix the spices well with mashed potatoes. Cook for 2 - 3 minutes on medium flames.

    Aloo chokha is ready. Serve it hot with litti or any flat bread.
