Veg Momos Recipe

A superfan of momos whether it is veg momos or chicken momos never ends up eating one plate of momos which contains of 5 -6 momos. That is why I always cook veg momos at home. Sometimes in pressure cooker and some time in steamer. While eating in restaurants it always seems that veg momos is going to be a tough recipe, but honestly, it is ont the one tough recipe. Veg momos is an easy recipe if some one can really roll the dough thin.

So rolling the dough thin is the only thing which is required to make veg momos at home. Momos can be made of thick roll also but that is not the very tasty because it tastes like the flour used. So keeping the rools thin is the secret.

When being a superfan of this dish from north east india, I often want to have it. But when it is made of maida or refined flour, We avoid to have it frequently, so I make veg momos at home using wheat flour.

Wheat flour veg momos are more healthy then the maida momos. It does not matter if you try it first time or second time, any time is good to start a healthy food. So, the first timers can also make the good tsty momos with wheat flour.

Preparation for Veg Momos Recipe

For Momos

  • Wheat Flour / Maida (All purpose flour) : 1 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil : 2 tsp
  • Water as required
  • For Chilli Sauce

  • Red Chilli Powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger : 1/2 inch
  • Garlic Cloves : 5-7
  • Whole Red Chillies : 3
  • Vinegar : 3 tsp
  • Water as required
  • Salt to taste
  • For Stuffing

  • Chopped Cabbage : 1 cup
  • Chopped Carrot : 1/4 cup
  • Chopped Green Chillies : 2 tsp
  • Chopped Garlic : 1 tsp
  • Chopped Onion : 1/4 cup
  • Soya Sauce : 1 tsp
  • Vineger : 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil : 1 tsp
  • How to Make Veg Momos

    Making Momos Sauce

    Place garlic cloves, ginger, whole red chilli in a grinder. Add 1 tsp of water and grind to make a fine paste.

    Add salt and vinegar. Add red chilli powder to provide color to the sauce.

    Veg Momos sauce is ready. Keep it aside.

    For Momos Flour

    Take wheat flour / maida in a bowl and add salt and oil to it. Kneed a soft dough by adding water to it. Cover with a wet cotton cloth and keep aside for 15 minutes.

    For veg momos filling

    Heat a tsp of oil in a frying pan. Add chopped garlic and fry till it is light golden in color.

    Add chopped onion. Fry for a while.

    Add soya sauce, vinegar and salt.

    Add grated carrot and mix well.

    Add grated cabbage and chopped green chilli and mix well. Cook for 7 - 8 minutes on low flames. Keep the vegetables crisp.

    Making veg momos

    Now make small round balls of dough and roll in the shape of circle of 2 inch radius.

    Keep the cabbage stuffing in center and lift the outer part of rolled dough. Join the outer part to close the stuffing in roll.

    Repeat the process for rest of the dough.

    Now steam for 8 - 10 minutes in a steamer or use the pressure cooker to steam. ( Pour a cup of water in Pressure cooker. Place a stand in pressure cooker and put a plate shapes sieve on it. Place the momos and close the lid. Remove whistle form lid. Cook for 8 - 10 minutes).

    Momos are ready.

    Plate the momos and spread red sauce. Serve hot.

    Making Sauce for veg momos, made of ginger, garlic, vinegar, red chilli and salt. Add one tsp of water in the grinder / blender/ mixer now.

    Sauce is ready after blending the ingredients. Add red chilli powder nd water to thin the sauce.

    Knead wheat flour dough for veg momos using little water at a time.

    Make tiny dough balls

    Heat oil and fry Garlic for the veg momos stuffing

    Add chopped onion in fried garlic

    Add grated green chilli now. Cook for 7 - 8 minutes on low flames.

    Place one tsp of veg momos stuffing at center

    Place an aluminium or steel sieve in cooker on a stand. Pour some water first in cooker or steamer.

    Placed the veg stuffed momos on the sieve and cook without whistle for 10 minutes on low flames.
